Frequently Asked Questions
General
1. What is the location of the school?
Hua-Hsing Chinese School rents the facility from PISD. Our current location is at Jasper High School in Plano.
2. Do you have any branches?
No. This is the only location of the school. Before moving to Plano in 2003, our previous location was at J. J. Pearce High School in Richardson.
3. When do the classes meet?
Our schedule follows PISD calendar with a fall term and a spring term. The two terms complete our one-year program for each level. The fall semester usually begins in early August and ends in early December. The spring semester normally starts in mid-January and ends in early May.
4. What if we feel the level is too hard or too easy for my child in the middle of a semester?
Students are being evaluated on a continuous basis by the teachers. In the case when a student’s performance indicates that he/she should be placed in a different level, the parents will be contacted. The student may be transferred to a higher or lower level if deemed necessary by both the teacher and the parents. A transfer fee may be charged depending on the time of the transfer.
5. What is the procedure for students missing classes?
If a student needs to miss a class the parents should make an arrangement to pick up the class material from the teacher during class time. If no arrangement is made, the class material will be given to the student in the following class. The teachers are not obligated to mail/fax the materials to the student.
6. How do I register my child?
Please refer to our Registration page.
7. What do I do with the coupon sheet?
A coupon sheet is given to each student at the beginning of each semester. Points are given to reward good behavior, class participation, and nicely done homework, etc. Students collect points and trade for prizes starting week 7 in each semester. On an average, a student gets between 6 and 12 points per week. If the original coupon sheet is lost, the student may purchase a blank sheet for $3 to start a new collection. However, lost points cannot be replaced. Unused points can be carried over to the next semester until policy changes.
Math
1. Are the classes taught in Chinese or English?
All math classes are taught in English.
2. When do the Math classes meet?
All math classes meet on Sundays from 1:15 to 2:35 pm.
3. What is the format of the classes?
The classes are instructor-led. Each class starts with a pop quiz of the previous week’s material, (except for the first week and the week following the mid-term exam) followed by a lecture of the current week’s topic. At the end of each class, students receive a homework pack to be completed at home. There is a mid-term exam and a final exam for each semester. All quizzes, homework papers, and exams are graded by the instructor and returned to the students. Each semester, parents receive a report card detailing the performance of each student.
4. What levels are being offered?
We offer classes form kindergarten to high school.
Elementary Level: K – 2
Intermediate Level: 3 – 5
Advanced Level: M (6-7), Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, and SAT.
The number of classes offered in each level depends on the number of enrollment for that level. Minimal enrollment requirement must be reached before a class/level can be offered.
5. Is there any difference between classes A, B, C, and D?
No. The styles of the teachers may be different from one another but all teachers in the same level teach the same material, which is provided by the school. All quizzes, homework, and exams are the same for each level
6. What are the differences between your program and other programs?
Our classes are taught in a classroom environment. Each lecture covers a certain math topic, giving the students the opportunity to learn/review the subject. Homework not only consists of repeated practice of basic concepts but also contains various types and levels of problem solving. All quizzes, homework and exams are graded, giving the students a chance to identify their weaknesses and learn from the mistakes.
7. How do I know which level fits my child?
New students are placed based on the current grades in their home school. An optional placement test (with a $10 charge) may be taken in July at the fall semester open house for students up to the intermediate level. Students in the advanced level are placed based on the subject they are learning at their home school.
8. What is the makeup policy for midterm and final exams?
Please refer to our Mid-term exam policy and Final exam policy.
